I have a date for becoming a US citizen - August 29th. USCIS seem fond of Wednesdays...

And Yellow tail was on offer in Kroger.

Well, we're on Cape Cod, because my brother and his family are here on holiday, so we came up to see them on Wednesday.

Yesterday morning, we were getting ready to go to breakfast when my father tripped and fell. So we spent yesterday at Cape Cod Hospital, where he was admitted with a fractured femur. He should have surgery today.

So: do we know someone with a spare room moderately close to Hyannis? Marcia will be staying here with him, probably for a week or more.

set to a possibly recognisable tune...

Yes, Manager Bobby, Youk shouldn't be here,
This guy don't need the bench, he needs a useful career.
Will Middlebrooks' played him a terrible trick
Und sabermetrically he's sick...

Gee, Manager Bobby, you've done it again,
This Bard don't need a start; he needs a year in the pen.
It's just his mechanics are misunderstood,
Deep down inside him, he is good!

Off to Memphis (by car, from Dallas). A pleasant little day's drive...

I have a date from USCIS for my naturalization interview! Wednesday April 25th, in Memphis TN.

Now to work out how to get there - flights seem remarkably expensive (about $1000) compared to Nashville and Knoxville (about $300-400).

What do people use for mail hosting? All I need is handling multiple addresses from multiple domains; I have no mailing lists left now that the Jomslist has moved.

I preferred running my own mail host, but as Comcast have made that impossible, I'm looking for something external.

Could someone with access to SMTP logs tell me where mail to smofs.org or bellhouse.org.uk is failing? Everything looks right, but nothing's arriving and the bounce messages aren't telling me much.

It appears that Comcast have decided that no-one should run mailservers at home, and are blocking port 25 both ways. Mail is therefore not getting through, at least until I can get it redirected to some other place where I have a mailbox.

We're in Arkansas, and I just checked my phone, which says it's 108 degrees F out there at the moment...

I believe it.

On the way to Dallas. We actually got away from home about when I expected to, and got as far as planned. We're in Jackson TN, having come via McEwan TN to see most of the grandchildren. So far so good...

Shift change time again. Actually we did this a few weeks ago, but someone apparently miscalculated. So it was all to do again...

Instead of my tidy 9-5.30 or 8.30-5 Tu-Sat shifts, I now have Mon-Fri (yay!) split shifts (boo!) 10.30-2.30 and 8pm-12mn. I suppose there are advantages as well as disadvantages - I get some afternoon time, at least.

ETA: turns out it's actually 10.30-2.45 and 7.45-11.30. Still no good for watching baseball...

Apparently we had a tornado in the area on Thursday night's storms.

Now Marcia tells me that it actually hit the next road over from us...

I see that ICUK, founded and run by former Cix teaboy (or so he says) Leslie Costar, has just bought Cix.

Various former Cixen have been popping up on Cix again...

of the network, that is.

Computers are named for the Muses, but I seem to have two other classes of device; Nooks and smartphones on the one hand, and storage devices (mostly USB hard drives) on the other.

What would people suggest as suitable naming schemes?

ETA: the three storage devices currently on the network are now Alexandria, Babylon and Ephesus. The determination of the name scheme is left as an exercise for the reader ;-)

The new toy was today's big spend - I replaced my old Samsung flip-phone with a new HTC Thunderbolt. Since I currently do tech support for HTC, there isn't much of a learning curve to worry about...

There's still some, however - my loaner Evo Shift is only a few months old, but a lot of new menu options have appeared. I think I want more rivets on the steampunk options, though.

In Other News, we had a full house of grandchildren last week - all six, including the two new ones. Kelly and his second wife, Amanda were visiting from Canada, so Jessie (his first wife) came up from Middle Tennessee with their eldest (Alex, who lives in TN rather than Edmonton) and her other three children. That's modern families for you...

Kelly and Amanda went off to Florida on Friday with Alex and Kelly's other two, so Jessie and her three went to Pigeon Forge for a couple of days, and we joined them at Dollywood on Saturday. It was cold, so we only spent about 3 hours there, letting the children take a few rides and walking round the park. Since we anticipate visiting later in the year, when Marcia's old boss will be visiting from the UK, we bought ourselves season tickets. So now anyone visiting us is in danger of being dragged there. Plus we may wander over and explore the park sans children a few times - there's quite a lot worth looking at apart from the rides, like the bald eagle preserve. And the steam railway, with its ex-WP&Y Baldwin Mikados.

XP disk with no filesystem
What would the team recommend for recovering data from a drive with a
damaged filesystem? The PC will not find any of its files and will not
boot either in safe mode or recovery mode.

We suspect that Windows Update decided to reboot the machine whilst a
defrag was in progress; I therefore suspect that the filesystem is
(mostly) still present but the pointers leading to it have been lost.

No, it's not one of my machines - it belongs to my mother-in-law.
