Well, we've now sorted out what's been interfering with the phones recently. Not, as I feared, the gauge on the oil tank, but the wireless network. Time for some reconfiguration...

from moms description and my own experience I would not rule out the DSL. While I know it is a second phone number, I have seen it often as not be dsl. An improperly filtered line when the dsl is on will cause just that kind of buzz in a phone system even if one of them is seperate number. All that would be required for it to cause it on the second line is to enter the house from the same point. On the other hand it might be the wireless. If you have a portable phone make sure it is not in the 900 megahertz range.
