of lath-and-plaster ceilings is that the plaster detaches itself from the lath suddenly.

We now have a 6'x2' (2mx1m) hole in the ceiling over the stairs.

Fortunately nobody was on them at the time, and given the fondness of the cats for lurking there, that's really rather lucky.

Ouch. It could have been so much worse.

Yikes! Glad no one, human or feline, was hurt. Bet that got the adrenaline pumping :-> Hope fixing it isn't too much of a hassle.

Celings are actually remarkably good at missing people.

Back in '81/82, one collapsed over my then girldfriend's and my bed. Happily, though we were tempted to stay in under the covers, we'd actually got up early that Sunday morning.

I'm amused at your conversion factors, by the way.

If it's any conmfort, when we had our roof redone earlier this year, one of the roofers fell in trhough our front bedroom ceiling (well, his right leg did, at least). Lots of dust and mess, and a very embarrassed roofer, but no-one harmed. I hope this gets fixed soon and well.
