Marcia and I have just joined AARP, in order to get a better discount on a hotel room in Chattanooga next weekend...

I see that ICUK, founded and run by former Cix teaboy (or so he says) Leslie Costar, has just bought Cix.

Various former Cixen have been popping up on Cix again...

of the network, that is.

Computers are named for the Muses, but I seem to have two other classes of device; Nooks and smartphones on the one hand, and storage devices (mostly USB hard drives) on the other.

What would people suggest as suitable naming schemes?

ETA: the three storage devices currently on the network are now Alexandria, Babylon and Ephesus. The determination of the name scheme is left as an exercise for the reader ;-)

The new toy was today's big spend - I replaced my old Samsung flip-phone with a new HTC Thunderbolt. Since I currently do tech support for HTC, there isn't much of a learning curve to worry about...

There's still some, however - my loaner Evo Shift is only a few months old, but a lot of new menu options have appeared. I think I want more rivets on the steampunk options, though.

In Other News, we had a full house of grandchildren last week - all six, including the two new ones. Kelly and his second wife, Amanda were visiting from Canada, so Jessie (his first wife) came up from Middle Tennessee with their eldest (Alex, who lives in TN rather than Edmonton) and her other three children. That's modern families for you...

Kelly and Amanda went off to Florida on Friday with Alex and Kelly's other two, so Jessie and her three went to Pigeon Forge for a couple of days, and we joined them at Dollywood on Saturday. It was cold, so we only spent about 3 hours there, letting the children take a few rides and walking round the park. Since we anticipate visiting later in the year, when Marcia's old boss will be visiting from the UK, we bought ourselves season tickets. So now anyone visiting us is in danger of being dragged there. Plus we may wander over and explore the park sans children a few times - there's quite a lot worth looking at apart from the rides, like the bald eagle preserve. And the steam railway, with its ex-WP&Y Baldwin Mikados.

XP disk with no filesystem
What would the team recommend for recovering data from a drive with a
damaged filesystem? The PC will not find any of its files and will not
boot either in safe mode or recovery mode.

We suspect that Windows Update decided to reboot the machine whilst a
defrag was in progress; I therefore suspect that the filesystem is
(mostly) still present but the pointers leading to it have been lost.

No, it's not one of my machines - it belongs to my mother-in-law.

So there I was, quietly reading my email, when the room went 'bang!'

It seems that lightning had struck our cable system. Total damage is unclear, but seems to include four PCs, two routers and a TV.

I'm off the net until at least tomorrow. Urgent mail should go to Marcia.illingworth@gmail.com.

We have water in the basement again. Unfortunately it looks as if this is down to a pinhole leak in the water heater rather than rain penetration.

A plumber has been summoned...

I have just spent $0.99 on an e-book (Ruth Downie's Terra Incognita, as it happens).

Can bankruptcy be far behind...?

If I were thinking of getting an e-book reader, which ones should I consider, and what are the relative tradeoffs?

Note that I'm in the USA, so eg the Kindle 3G would be in play...

In case anyone was worried, this house explosion is nowhere near us in Powell; all here are fine.

It is, however, just up the road from Ed Brown's house, where we usually gather on Saturdays to watch the UT Volunteers play football. This week was no exception, but we weren't there at the time, and no other houses were affected.

More rain, so a bit of water in the basement again.

All the boxes of stuff are up on stands now, so no damage. I have finished vacuuming the water, and the dehumidifiers are back running...

On the "good", I definitely start at Sitel on May 10th, doing support for HTC cellphones. This is not wonderful, but it pays (some) money and (more important) pays Social Security.

On the "bad", Jeremiah's job went away today - the company he's working for essentially ran out of money, so had to get rid of most of their staff. So it goes...

Then again, the Sox are recovering from their poor start to the season, the tomato plants appear to be thriving, the bluebirds have raised their first brood, and all in all things appear to be on the up.

or something.

From time to time I have to ring up my UK card issuers to renew my permission to make charges from outside the UK. Today it was the Abbey's turn (or Santander as they now are). So I dialled the number given on the card for use when outside the UK...

...and got a recorded announcement: This number is for the use of customers calling from outside the UK. Please hang up and call 0845...

Weird.

carry on happening.

We're into the main round of cat checkups, with Princess and Duchess getting done first. Princess had a sniffle, and Duchess needed dental work, so that was $520 well spent :-( They had a further checkup the other day, and both have gained serious weight back, which is Good. Dr Rick took the opportunity of having Duchess sedated to do Xrays, which shows she has an enlarged liver with calcifications, which is roughly what we thought.

Marcia is off work with severe anaemia, so will be getting iron infusions over the next couple of weeks - more over at her own LJ ([livejournal.com profile] mkillingworth).

Sitel's mills continue to grind, and yesterday spat out an invitation to interview on Wednesday, with a possible start date of May 10th - just as well I won't be in Chicago then.

Meanwhile, bread is baking, and the Red Sox season is underway...

ETA. Taxes. Taxes are done. H&R Block agreed that my UK Govt pension is not taxable in the USA (as long as I'm not a US citizen) so we're in line for a refund of $950 rather than a bill of $6k+. Coming next - property taxes (about $930). Easy come, easy go...

ETA: Marcia's LJID fixed.

Oscar and Puff have, in their wrangling, succeeded in breaking one of our Beth Willinger dragon-engraved goblets :-(

It's a reasonably clean break at the foot, but there's a part missing or powdered.

So, after Sitel got rid of all their temps in January, I put in an application. And waited. And wrote it off.

But today they phoned, and I have a follow-up tomorrow...

Wouldn't be well-paid, but I don't need well-paid.

Walmart are selling storage cheap at the moment, so I've bought 3 sets of shelving (4 shelves@$13.97 each) which are now serving as bases to keep the boxes off the floor. So I'm now prepared for the next flood...

I may get another couple of sets so as to rearrange the other boxes now stacked on tables &c back to where they used to be.

One more box still damp, but not too bad: the cover of The Kai Lung Omnibus is spotted, and a copy of The Sign of Four printed in Pitman's shorthand is likely a total loss.
