We've been able to do okay with the crayons we have (except certain colors, like yellow in particular, are terrible); however, that may be because the crayons from earlier editions are better than what Mayfair is buying these days.
You could try whiteboard dry-erase markers, although Mayfair advises against it. They do make a thin-tip type. Test your markers on a tiny corner on the edge first, though. And make sure you clean the board thoroughly after the game.

I've played with dry-erase markers. You have to be careful with them because some of them don't erase properly. There's a blue phantom line between Chicago and New York in one friend's copy of the game.
