for Noreascon...

We started out on Wednesday afternoon by driving down to Gatwick and staying overnight in the Hilton. They have a deal for 1 night and up to 16 days parking that isn't much more expensive than the parking alone would be.

Of course, we invited [livejournal.com profile] the_magician over do dine with us. The hotel restaurant has an excellent opinion of itself, judging by its prices, and the carvery option was indeed excellent. The meal still cost more than the room, however.

So on Thursday we had a nice leisurely breakfast and strolled over to checkin, which all went smoothly - the biggest delay was that the system didn't want to accept our OnePass numbers for some reason. We spent money in World of Whiskies; Marcia spent money in Harrods, and I spent money in Books Etc, buying an anthology of historical mysteries which included one by Peter Garrett.

The flight to Houston was long and boring, but we had 3 seats between the two of us. Immigration at Houston was a problem with a long queue, but that seemed to be down to us being the third international arrival in a row behind at least one from Mexico...

Immigration was fine, no fingerprinting or photographs yet for those of us travelling on visa waivers. We shall see what it's like in November...

Several large beers and a catfish sandwich later, we headed for the plane to Edmonton. This wasn't too crowded, but we wound up with a 3rd person in our row, who was apparently a floatplane pilot up in the Northwest Territories. Not that we were up to much conversation by this time, it being about 3am UK time when we took off.

And Marcia got to use her British passport for the first time entering Canada! We were collected from the airport by Marcia's son Kelly and his (Canadian) wife, which was just as well, as we weren't making much sense by then, I think.

And so to bed.
