Bah

So I went and bought myself a 256Mb thumb drive today, as I can see situations in which it couldd be useful & stuff.

Tried it. Didn't work. Back to the store: still didn't work, so swapped it for one that did.

Tried the new one. This time the magic smoke came out and the (presumably USB) mouse has stopped working as well.

Bah.

In other news, Marcia should be home tomorrow, we hope. They seem to have decided that a slight temperature is her normal reaction to surgery, but they're doing a few tests to check.

What make was the drive? I've had three USB drives, none have done anything particularly untoward. Swapped the first (HP, 32 Mb) because it wasn't compatible with Windows 98, the second (damned if I can remember the make, also 32 MB) is fine with the correct driver loaded, as is the third (Belkin; I don't actually need 128 MB yet, so it's sitting in the drawer until I do).

Sumsvision or something. I'm pretty sure it's the port, and I suspect it's putting mains across terminals that should only have 5V. :-(

That's what I thought too. Put in drive, base unit powers down, magic smoke comes out of drive...

Fortunately the guys who sold me the drive also built the base unit earlier this year, so they're kinda stuck (I hope).

No Novacon for us this year - the next trip will be to the States for Thanksgiving.

Actually Novacon seems rather to have fallen off our regular con circle in favour of Smofcon. WHich we also haven't been to in yonks (not since KIM's one in York).
