This morning the ntl: broadband kit turned up nice and early. So, with only a couple of glitches (a non-working microfilter and the wrong username), we now have broadband up and working on Marcia's machine.

US Robotics Wireless Router with integrated ADSL Adapter £99.00
Asus WL160g USB Wireless Network Card £29.00
... I just talked to them and they are out of stock of the routers at the moment but expect to have some back in Tuesday or Wednesday ... though to be honest the chap I talked to was very hesitant and uncertain ... maybe he's suffering from the season!
As has been pointed out by other people, there are some great deals around, particularly if you (or I) wanted a notebook PCMCIA/PC Card based connector (Maplins are throwing in the PCMCIA adapter "free" if you buy certain routers from them).
PC World have the BT wireless ADSL router with a PCI card for a desktop and a PCMCIA card for a laptop for 109 for all three bits.
PC World also have the Belkin ADSL wireless router for 65.99 on their website.
Dabs have the Netgear DG834G Wireless ADSL Modem and Router 802.11g for £69.32, and the 3Com Wireless ADSL Modem Router & USB adapter
(ADSL modem, router and wireless access point, plus an extra USB wireless adapter for your PC) for 79.99

Hard-wired or WiFi? WiFi is handy but the security problems need to be considered, and in an old building like yours it might not work too well.

Or so the theory goes. We shall see what actually happens.
