At one point, we looked at moving to Calgary (we're both British citizens, and Marcia's younger son lives in Edmonton).

Edmonton didn't seem too bad a couple of weeks ago. A bit wet, maybe, but otherwise OK. Can't speak for Calgary, since our train went north of it.
On the other hand, that was August.
BC is pretty good, I gather.

BC has an ocean for warmth...
Winter sets in in Calgary in late September and continues through May.
