I've been redoing my various internet accounts and trying to rationalise things. The Cix account (timill) will stay; the compuserve one will go - I don't seem to be able to log in any more(!); the demon account will probably go sometime this year.
So I'll wind up with:
Cix: for conferencing
NTL: for connectivity only - as staff, Marcia can get a deal, apparently
News.Individual.Net: for usenet
soho-uk: for domain, web and mail hosting.
I've got a number of domains:
bellhouse.org.uk: for mail addresses
timill.co.uk: for most web pages (£16 pa for hosting)
coveney.org.uk: for village stuff
smofs.org: for mailing lists, WSFS BM stuff, and actual mail accounts (£50 pa for hosting)
jomsb.org.uk: for fun
So far: all the individual bits are working. The lists are still at Demon on dialup, as is mail reception. I'm using both Demon and NIN for usenet.
Still to do: get the NTL: account and check that I can work it with KA9Q
Decide on a new mailer or approach Nikki Locke for a new registration code - the existing one is tied to smof.dcu
Move about 20 mailing lists subscriptions from demon to bellhouse.
Close down the surplus accounts, saving about £350 pa.

Congratulations!
Compuserve for no apparant reason whatsoever (except for emotional reasons ... I joined up years and years ago, and when I did I sent an email asking if I could have a user number with 5, 17, 23 or 42 in it (all special numbers for me either from the Illuminati books or the HitchHikers guide), and I knew that UK compuserve numbers began with 100 (rather than the "7" for the US, and of course compuserve numbers were in octal in those days so no "8" or "9" in user numbers). They didn't acknowledge the email :-( but sent me a user number 100042,2357 which, after a short while I realised had ALL my numbers in it (17 as first and last digit, 42, 23 and 5) and so I'm really loathe to give that up (or to lose my the-magician@compuserve.com address)
And BlueYonder for cable modem (I don't use any of the rest of the blue yonder services)
Plus one or two (or 50) domain names (gulp!)
I now can't keep track of all the names. I put them all on www.chrisoshea.com at one point, but that is out of date now :-(
I lost a few domains (most notably folkfestivals.com) due to my inattention or not having the money/energy to renew when they came up for renewal.
I nearly lost miskatonic.ac this month, thought I'd left it too late to renew but then they emailed me to say I had one more chance to renew (at price "x", whereas buying it new would cost more than 3x)
no subject
One more down; still lots to go.
