Just had a phone call from my boss to say the upper floors of the office are closed today, so not going in was the correct decision.

One 150-mile round trip saved...

I would have thought that offering to come in and pretending to be surprised when they said no was the optimum choice, especially if you can claim that you're entitled to a day's pay. But maybe your pay structure doesn't work like that?
