The Weekend
Just to catch up:
Friday was St George's Day, so we had an Event at the village hall - food (sausages, mash & onion gravy; apple pie and cream). As usual, we were off in our expectations, but not too badly (expected 25, catered for 30, got about 20). Marcia played dominoes (despite suffering pain from what we think is an inflamed gall bladder), I lost to Roger Dyer at shove ha'penny (or rather shove 2p), and others were playing darts. Having the bar in the main hall helped with the atmosphere.
The topless bar was duly admired, as were the bits of worktop that will form its top. We also said we'd be interested in the now-spare side tables from the bar (a useful size for food at our barbie).
Saturday morning I finally got organised and got Marcia to Nationwide while it was still open. We got a cheque for the Hotel de France staff fund from the Helicon 2 savings account, as well as reimbursements for me. Only subs to Dave Tompkins or Rob Sneddon to go now, for maintenance of the Eastercon Art Show kit.
Saturday afternoon: gardening, followed by watching paint dry, otherwise known as the NFL draft, round 1. This took from 5pm BST to about 10:30 for the first 32 picks. Of course, I had to wait up as my team, the Patriots, had the 32nd pick (as well as the 21st). marcia was not happy that, after waiting to see who the Titans would take with pick 27, they traded it to Houston with about 5 minutes on the clock.
Sunday: more gardening. The front patio is now mostly tidy, and one of the planters has been severely weeded. To come: planting, once the danger of frosts has gone away. Currently (Tuesday) a low of -1 is scheduled for Friday night :-(
Monday: work, with the new MRJ (150, due April 1st, but fashionably late as usual) followed by a meeting in the hall to look at setting up a group to build the new Parish Plan. There's nothing like a definite commitment... A county co-ordinator spoke, followed by two people from Little Downham, who had been involved in doing their PP, which is now nearly complete.
So guess who volunteered? Answer - only me. Marcia wasn't feeling at all well, and will be more involved with Interaction than I plan to be. So I'll have time over the next year that she won't. We think...

There's a place near me that sells pine butcher-block style countertops at quite a reasonable price. Not nearly so good as some other woods for the job, of course, but looks nice and is affordable, and ought to hold up reasonably well, if kept appropriately oiled.
Yes, you've guessed it - I'm planning to use that for the sections of my counters that don't get granite tile. (And then a routed wood edge around the lot.)
