I've found that the local council have a web page to report abandoned vehicles, so next door's Audi with the expired tax has now been shopped. We believe that they have in fact moved away this week and left it behind, so it is abandoned rather than just untaxed.

Ummm...what if they haven't actually moved away? Or if they've sold the car to someone else who will be picking it up? Then they're stuck paying for towing because someone without all the facts called to get them towed. I'm sure there's backstory here I haven't caught, but if it were MY Audi, I'd be...irritated. :)

If it were your Audi, I'm sure you wouldn't be breaking the law with it.

When I was on the receiving end of this sort of case, the local officials rang me up to ask about it. Of course, my car was taxed, and was only parked in a odd place for a couple of days while I sorted out a means of bypassing the broken ignition switch.

But it costs money for the council to tow and dispose of cars, so I expect they'll try to find the owners first (and I told them what I think has happened). I certainly don't expect them to tow it until other avenues have been exhausted.

This car has not moved since at least June and the tax expired at the end of August, so it shouldn't be on the road.

It's possible even that it's stolen and dumped, though I'd expect the neighbours to have done something were that the case.

And that's "not moved" as in "mud flowing down the street has piled up against the wheels" not "is always parked in the same place".
