Yes - as far as I can tell, it's original to that part of the house, which means pre-1850. I'd expected it to be a modern plasterboard replacement, since the staircase was redone sometime in the 1950s or 60s.
They probably saw no reason to touch it then. We had our place completely redone before we moved in but the only ceiling that was touched even with a total stripout was the kitchen because it was totally rotten in places, and had to have one part plasterboarded after the old chimney was taken out anyway. I'm pretty sure the only thing keeping the plaster up in places is the paper over it but I'm not pushing for replacement. Plaster dust does 'orrible things to my asthma. This place is 1920s BTW.
The wall on the left is pre-1850. The ones at the back and right are from the 50s or 60s, so I expected that putting them up would have meant damaging the ceiling.
