The local builder has now been round, and reckons the thing to do is to knock down the remaining plaster in that panel, clean up the laths, and apply new plaster rather than plasterboarding it. All for a total of something around £240 plus VAT.

And he can do it Monday or Tuesday, he thinks...

Well, that's not nearly as bad as I might have expected, given the picture you posted -- roughly US$600 equivalent, net. Hope it all goes well.

Good for you having a builder who can do that sort of thing. From chatting with the plasterer who did our bathroom when it was gutted and refitted recently that's a dying skill. They're far more likely to just know how to skim plasterboard for finishing than do proper full depth plaster nowadays.
