because the bar in the Village Hall is now finished, with a top and everything. We held a barbecue there on Friday; a slow start (and even slower cooking) but plenty of people turned up as the night went along.
I happened to be standing behind the bar when the first customers came in, so I wound up spending a couple of hours serving. It's been nearly 30 years since I've done that, I think. Memo to VH Committee: need bar stools for behind the bar as well as in front. Standing that long is Tiring.
Now we need to work out why that was successful, when the St George's Day event wasn't, despite being better advertised and promising more.
On Saturday my brother Nick came over, and we went to the
Ely Model Railway Club annual show at the Maltings. My nephew Benjamin had not finished his homework, and so was grounded... A nice small show, with limited trade support, but I got a copy of Peter Paye's book on the Stoke Ferry branch, which I've been looking for for some years. I also escaped without buying any track from the Totally Trains stand. Safe for another year, maybe...
Having run out of food, we went out in the evening to our usual Indian restaurant, currently called the Eden in Broad Street, Ely. It changes its name every couple of years, though the staff remain the same... Presumably it goes broke from time to time.
Sunday: a slow day. I fixed up a footstool that had been broken the previous day - it's good to have the right tools and enough of them. In this case, proper woodworking glue, clamps, and some offcuts from some beer barrel stands I made last year. I suspect the stool of being stronger now than it was, even without the pins I was thinking of adding.
Followed by shopping and BBQing at home - steaks, burgers and corn-on-the-cob buttered and wrapped in foil. And a beer or two...
