The Ebay vendor who's been messing me about for a couple of weeks (PSU on USB HDD case was DoA; product shipped from Honk Kong not Essex as listed) has sent me a note requesting feedback.

I think I'll leave it a bit...

I would send him an answer via the eBay messaging system that you would leave feedback when the problem is sorted, and if it isn't sorted by this Friday then you will file a claim with PayPal. This is not a situation to allow procrastination on.

This reminds me of my experience with one eBay seller regarding a boxed set of CDs of recordings by the Roumanian pianist Dinu Lipatti. The outer cardboard box arrived and had obviously been abused -- it had dents and scores and a big rip. Now, I find the box to be an essential part of the collectibility of an item, so I wrote to the seller several times, very politely, and was ignored until I threatened to leave them negative feedback. Finally I was allowed to return the box for a refund ... after which the seller wrote to chide me because the box was torn!

I don't (obviously) send feedback requests when there's an issue or dispute -- but I do send little notes if I haven't heard from people saying something like 'I noticed you haven't left feedback yet. Can you let me know if you have any problems or concerns with the item? I'd like to try and sort anything like that out if possible.' Result has always been prompt positive feedback so far. I always worry if people don't leave feedback, particularly if something is relatively expensive.

When buying, if the product is as specified and otherwise fine, but shipped from hong kong or china, I leave positive feedback but include 'product shipped promptly from HONG KONG' in my comment. I'll also knock the detailed star ratings down a bit.
