Back in December, when the container arrived, my main PC wouldn't boot. So I bought another, and both Marcia's and my spare booted OK with the PSU swapped to 110V instead of 230V. No problems, then...

Today I finally got around to swapping the PSU out for a new 110V job from Staples, and it boots quite happily now. So now all I need to do is buy it some new speakers and a wireless mouse and keyboard, and it can live by the TV in the family room so I can watch MLB.TV on the big screen.

To balance this, one of the light sockets in one of the fixtures there has failed (swapping bulbs showed that it wasn't a bulb failure) and the batteries in my multimeter are flat...

First there was our cookout, where I got to play with my new Char-Griller Duo and find that it works nicely.

Toy of the day was probably the charcoal starter; a tin tube about 7" diameter and 11" tall with a divider about a third of the way up. Holes in the divider and round the base. A sheet of newspaper crumpled up in the base, some charcoal in the top. Light the newspaper and in 10 minutes you have nice hot charcoal. No lighter fluid, no nothing extra.

We thought we would have a chair shortage, but we found a patio set at Krogers, some folders at Walmart, and borrowed a few from Joanne, and we were OK - we never needed the camp chairs that we had from England.

All in all we had a couple of dozen people; neighbours, some from Marcia's work, and old college friends who are still around.

Too many flies, but a good time was had by all...

On Sunday we left the house a bit after ten and progressed towards Nashville for Khen Moore's funeral. A good turnout - there were 49 people at the restaurant afterwards, so probably nearer 75 at the memorial itself. Naomi taped the memories, with the intention of making them available somehow. At one point we had a full-on thunderstorm outside, and the power went off for a minute or so...

Today: back to cleanup and working out what must be eaten and what can be frozen.

Footnote: the Pilot at I-40 exit 320 has regular at $2 33.9, which is good for this area.

Have now changed the flag out front from the Tennessee state flag to the Grand Union flag, just to confuse people. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] del_c for the suggestion.

Went looking in odd boxes for our folding chairs, and found four of them.

Also found a box in a previously unsuspected place, which when opened contained the missing end tables! Now assembled and in the family room.

Just had a phone call from Steve Francis: apparently Khen died late
yesterday afternoon. He was found by Naomi Fisher, on her way back
from Midwestcon - she tried CPR but unsuccessfully.

No further news at this time.

I have a new toy.

Project for today: get it out of the car and assemble it (it's heavy).

Project for the weekend: play with it.

After that we can start looking at smoking joints...

Our temporary fostering of two rescue cats seems to have been a success, as they should now both have permanent homes.

Reports say that Max has settled in well in his new place and seems happy as an only cat, which had been a bit of a worry.

Puff has been to a number of shows and attracted some interest, but no definite applications. So last night, after speaking with Jan from SARG (the rescue group) Marcia put in an application to adopt Puff permanently...

So unexpected!

while I remember.

Fluor Field is indeed reminiscent of Fenway, though the offices over the Monster are more Camden Yard.

Ryan Dent was impressive, while Oscar Tejeda was not (but that could well be small sample size).

"Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in the seventh, and "Sweet Caroline" in the eighth, and no 'God Bless America".

"Please stand for our National Anthem." What this 'we', white man?

Six runs=six free donuts from participating Dunkin's. What's the betting Oak Ridge isn't one?

Max, one of our two short-term foster cats, has been adopted long-term and went off today to his new home.

Puff has had quite a lot of interest, but no taker so far. So we're down to nine cats...

In the meantime, I'm off tomorrow on my first US solo expedition in many years - down to Greenville SC for a Software AG user group meeting. Not that I expect much to come from it, but at least I'll be able to take in a Greenville Drive home game while I'm there.

Anyone care to identify this well-known dish on a local (Knoxville) Indian restaurant's menu: "Chicken cooked in lightly spiced sauce with garlic, ginger, onions, tomatoes, lemon, chili, and special herbs with potatoes."

And the answer is... )

Puff and Max have now settled in - Max lurks in the storage room mostly, but Puff is out-and-about.

Three more cats got annual jabs, and also got weighed:
Tabitha 11 lbs
Oscar 12 lbs
Patchouli 13 lbs.

Oscar, as regular readers will recall, is our Big Cat. Someone is now on a diet (though since we keep munchies available 24/7, this is mainly not giving her gooshyfood in the afternoon).

Capita appear to have found my pension records, which means we probably will be at Anticipation.

have been delivered, and are resting suspiciously at the back of their crate in the family room.

There may be pictures later, if I can remember how uploading works here...

In anticipation of the grandkids visiting this weekend, we bought a DVD player/home theatre setup last Sunday. As expected, it refused to play Region 2 disks, so I left well alone until our visitors had been and gone.

So I googled for a hack, found one, and tried it. It worked first time, which amazed me, as the remote is rather picky about being pointed correctly, and I was expecting to need a few retries.

So now I can watch Curse of the Were-Rabbit again...

-=-=-=-

Marcia says I should point out that, as a result of a divorce, Puff and Max are living confined to a bathroom 24/7, so that's why we're giving them house room...

We have eight cats already, which is Quite Enough.

So now we're fostering Puff and Max on behalf of SARG. Just for a month or two while they get adopted permanently.

Really.

Honestly.

...Maybe :-)
