I need a cane...

Somebody offered me a seat on the Underground yesterday.

Take heart

I'm sure they only thought you were pregnant.

Yeah, it's happened to me recently quite a lot. And I didn't really think I looked my age...

Of course, if you had a cane no-one would offer you a seat.

You want the cane to beat the cheeky young whipper-snapper with?

Ah, I remember the days when I carried a whipper. Good times.

Ouch. My sympathies.

Yesterday, had I been in your position, I would have taken the seat. I could barely walk, and I could have used that cane. Fortunately, my minor back strain is healing.

For a woman transitioning to a Certain Age, Michael Flanders told it thusly:

I never thought, quite suddenly,
The day would come at last,
When I must quietly tell myself,
My dear, your youth has past.
Now you must learn to wear a shawl,
And wrap up when it's cold,
For yesterday I felt still young,
Today I know I'm old.
Today a bus conductor showed me age has left its scar,
Instead of saying "Hop in, ducks," he said "Now come on, Ma!"

Couple of years ago I had the misfortune to travel by train between Birmingham and Crewe about 5 p.m. - and no-one would give me a seat until we got to Wolverhampton even though I was on a crutch recovering from a broken leg!

Today I boarded a bus and realised once I got on that school had just let the sprogs out - so of course I had to stand! I hope that when I used to travel to/from school by bus 30 years ago I was better behaved, but I rather fear I wasn't.
